The Elementary Education Coordinator, Gabriel Liévano, known among the entire school community as Koko, published a book that brings together magnificent photographs of Havana, Cuba.
“Ojalá” [“Wish”] is the title of this issue that shows documentary photographs of the city of Havana, its people, the emblematic places and the daily life of the island.
“My inspiration came from the desire I had to travel to Cuba. In 2014, I had the opportunity to be invited to an international photography meeting and to hold an exhibition in a gallery. On that trip, I took several photographs of people and places that caught my attention, then I collected them and the idea of creating a book with them came up” said Koko.
This book is also a tribute to the singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez, an important reference for Cubans and a musician who has accompanied Koko during different stages of his life. Several verses of his songs were chosen randomly to accompany the images, giving meaning to the photographs. “Ojalá [Wish] – is one of the most beautiful songs by Silvio Rodríguez, that’s why I titled my book this way,” Koko said.
Federico Diaz-Granados, Director of the school’s Cultural Agenda, made the prologue for the book. This first special edition has no commercial purpose and its launch will take place in mid-June at the Cultural Center.
